Xabier Erkiza
Sound artist, composer, independent researcher, and curator. Over the past three decades, his work has consistently delved into the intricate phenomenologies of listening and the world of sound creation.
In the fields of cinema and performing arts, Erkizia has worked in sound design, composition, and editing for more than 100 films and stage productions. Notable collaborations with filmmakers such as Lois Patiño and Maddi Barber have earned him international recognition, receiving several awards, including the 2024 Best Soundtrack Award from the International Cinephile Society. In 2021, he presented his first feature film, O GEMER, produced by Atekaleun Films, and has served as a jury member for international festivals such as Berlinale 2024.
Beyond the audiovisual field, Erkizia’s explorations and research primarily manifest in sound installations, exhibited at renowned festivals, cultural centers, and museums worldwide. Alongside his artistic activities, he has curated various exhibitions, including initiatives like the ERTZ Festival of Other Music (1999-2017) and the Donostia-based artistic production center Arteleku (2002-2014).
Erkizia’s work also extends to the media landscape, where his contributions include creative radio works and articles on listening culture.
Since 2018, he has been a professor at EQZE Zine Eskola film school in San Sebastián, and his commitment to education extends to frequent collaborations with various educational institutions and universities.
